Nature TV has been my go-to rainy-day-at-home band since 2020, when their Lady Luck EP was released and I heard “Leaving Earth Behind” for the first time. It’s been pouring for two days as I am writing this review, so it’s fitting.
Nightshift EP has a similar feel to their last couple of EPs, but it’s a little more sure of itself; As if they’ve grown more confident, knowing that they have a place of their own in the sea of indie music being released right now.
The lead single, “Treading Water”, is my favorite song of the EP, it feels like a follow-up to “Mike Fake”, of their Heartbreak Skyline EP. The song is faster than most from the band, as is “Self Esteem”. In both tracks, they match a somewhat unexpected rhythm with very strong vocals and lyricism, making these stand out from the rest of the EP. “Pays To Be Patient” shows the band’s ability to produce slower songs that stay compelling, and “Long Rein” feels like a throwback to Lady Luck EP. “One For The Road” is a solid slow jam single from the band, but it might not have belonged in the final slot of the tracklist, which could have benefited by ending on a faster song.
There are few EPs and albums for which my only downside is about the order of the songs, so I think this EP is another great entry from Nature TV, and I’m ready for more.
