What is a Zine?

A zine (pronounced zeen) is a self-published mini-magazine that has a long history in direct contrast to mainstream music journalism and the music industry. You could say it’s the most eclectic form of music journalism.

Founded in sci-fi fandoms of the 30s/40s, zines gained popularity among the punk scene in the 70s as a way to distribute authentic work by means of the creator’s immediate resources. Usually assembled quickly, xeroxed, and distributed for free, zines can now be found in many forms ranging from small foldables to bound books!

KXUA put together a zine in the early days of the station, which we consider the first zine. That was a one off thing, or so they thought.

KXUA ZINE VOLUME 5: SPRING 2024

This zine is almost entirely made up of hand-made art that was scanned in! news to come on a print edition, but for now, here’s the digital copy:

KXUA ZINE VOLUME 4: SPRING 2023

This year’s Zine includes art, activities, and more from 17 Student-DJs, with a “Then and Now” theme.

KXUA ZINE VOLUME 3: SPRING 2022

We decided to keep up with our tradition of making a zine every spring semester! Our Zine features work from 15 contributors with a wide range of art, poetry, and, of course, music recommendations.
