Blood Orange /// Four Songs

By Anna Packwood

Devonte Hynes has been producing work under the name Blood Orange since 2011, and his new EP Four Songs is his first project since Angel’s Pulse in 2019. Immediately from my first listen of the single “Jesus Freak Lighter,” I knew this EP would be a comeback that did not disappoint. Four Songs drew me in instantly because it not only has that classic Blood Orange sound listeners know and love, but also features seamless sprinklings of new style that piqued my interest. I love how this EP provides that atmospheric energy that Hynes has never failed to create with his music and feels highly reminiscent of his much earlier works, particularly “Champagne Coast” and “Bad Girls.” What I found unique about Four Songs is the unpredictable but clean tempo switches with no loss of ambience throughout. This was an excellent preview of what’s next for Hynes. I like the direction that he seems to be going with this futuristic production, and I can’t wait to hear more Blood Orange soon.
