Interview: Wilco’s Glenn Kotche

By Abigail Lynn Davidson

Glenn Kotche is probably best known as Wilco‘s long-time drummer & percussionist. He joined the band during the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which peaked at thirteen on the Billboard 200, the band’s first time breaking the top 50. Yankee is arguably one of the most iconic indie albums of the ’00s, and opened the band up to a much wider audience. All nine albums since have charted, and four were top ten albums. Post-lockdown, they released two sonically different albums, Cruel Country and Cousin, in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

While Kotche is probably most known for his work as a member of Wilco, he is also half of the duo On Fillmore, a member of Loose Fur, and he is a former member of The Minus 5. Between his work with the aforementioned bands, and his solo work (see below), he’s appeared on over 100 recordings in total. He was named to Rolling Stone’s greatest 100 drummers of all time list, among many other accolades.
