Griff, Sarah Faith Griffiths, is an English singer, song writer, and producer at 22 years old. Griff has been one of my favorite R&B and pop artists since 2020, her song “Good Stuff” popped up on a YouTube ad and I have been a fan ever since. I have attentively followed her music and her progress as an artist, waiting excitedly for what she will achieve next. Her musiccaptivated me due to her vulnerable and comforting lyrics with songs like “Moment” and “One Night” being some of my favorites. Griff described the songs in Vert1go (vol.1) released 20th of October 2023, album to be close to her but this made eager to get into my feelings. After having heard the chorus again and again on her Instagram and Tik Tok I became excited as the day grew closer to the release of her single Vertigo.
Vertigo is a sensation of being in a state of confusion or dizziness. Griff expressed that the single of the album, “Vertigo”, comes from being in a creative low, feeling pressure to writeand the spiral set of stairs of a house she stayed in.
The song beings with what can be described as nervous breathing with a heartrate measuring machine in the back. The catchy lyrics are like a conversation with yourself, where one speaks and some other version responds with a cleareranswer, almost like a moment where you call things for what they are moment, if you will. The second song of the set “Into the Walls” was the song I could not understand at first until I sat with it, and it felt too close to my emotions. Griff wrote on her Instagram about how this song is about being jealous of walls’ strength and their ability to be still. The lyrics made me take a deep breath and let a teardrop fall, but the track is the perfect song to beautifully dance around in a room in a dramatic way to relieve a hint of bad vibes. “19th hour” is a perfect example of Griff’s music: vulnerable lyrics, sections of voice doubling and a catchy track.
Overall, my favorite song of the set, I remembered hearing this for the first time on the bus and feeling the air of the main theme of my life till we get to Christmas. The buildup of the lyrics leads to a nice blend ofharmonies and it’s just a great song you can bop your head with.
